This information sheet explains how art centres that meet the legal definition of being a ‘charity’ can register with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC). Registration with the ACNC is required before an organisation can receive charity tax concessions from the ATO, such as deductible gift recipient (DGR) status. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander corporations registered with the Office of the Registrar of Indigenous Corporations (ORIC) under the Corporations (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander) Act 2006 (CATSI Act) are eligible to apply for registration with the ACNC as a charity.
